One of life’s small but nagging mysteries… September 12, 2006

..why does it take more space to be organized than disorganized?? It just doesn’t seem fair. Every time I get fed up with the chaotic state of my raw materials and try to “organize” I end up with less space to use.

I rented a storage locker yesterday, to put boxes in. I have, probably, over 200 boxes of fabric in the studio, not to mention boxes of paper, ephemera, found objects and other stuff. Yarn. Buttons. Jewelry. I need five of me to use this stuff up faster.

Anyhow, I need some space for visitors–mail artists and such–and since I can’t put them in the locker the fabric will have to go. About 150 boxes of it, if I’ve done my ciphering correctly. So I spent yesterday evening hauling all the potential emigrants to the front of the room near the door. (Yes, I am sore today!) And so far the room doesn’t seem any “better.” Actually, it looks worse. But that must be an illusion, right? Guess I’ll just have to go see how it strikes me today. Now to get all those boxes downstairs and into the car. I am so glad they installed the elevator.

I read something somewhere recently–someone claiming that there is no such thing as disorganization but rather self-organization. So the things I haul to the studio and don’t immediately “put away” somewhere simply organize themselves. This person was actually advocating adopting self-organization as a plan. The Plan. And why not?

Liisa — I know EXACTLY what you mean!

I rented a 30-yard dumpster and it is sitting in my driveway…this thing is HUGE.

I am clearing out my basement to be able to make repairs and re-do the place as studio space(s). My nephew is helping me sort and clean…I have been in this house for 17 years. I cannot begin to tell you what the basement looks like, except that I haven’t seen the floor in ages! There are stacks and stacks of boxes and a path running to important areas (water heater, fuse box, furnace, etc)

Well…Aaron and I started clearing. We were at it a FULL 7 hours and the dumpster is 1/4 filled. While you can SEE the floor now in the main room down there, you cannot see any table surfaces…a person who has never been down there would probably call one of those tv shows for an intervention for me…LOL It is a worse mess than when we started — I swear — you HAVE to be right — it HAS to be some sort of optical illusion…it just HAS to be! (and we have 2 1/2 more rooms to go!) LOL

Good Luck with the sorting and storing!

Cheers –
Took

Hey, Took! I am still figuring out how this blog thingie works. It wasn’t obvious to me that you had left a comment almost two weeks ago. So, how is your project going? I have to admit when you started to talk about filling a dumpster all I could think was , Oh No, what is she throwing away? I’d probably rescue half that stuff if I were there. I’m glad I’m not!! Renting the locker was a good thing even though, now that the Moving-in Special Rate is done with, I am faced with the reality of another monthly bill to pay. BUT, I am liking the studio so much more, have even had some guests in and did some sewing for the first time in months. Because I could get at the sewing machine. Yay!
